Ready to put on your boots and hit the trails? Murphy, NC offers many hiking trails for every type of hiker. Some to check out are Fires Creek Falls, Piney Knob Trails, Murphy River Walk and Panther Top Lookout Tower. Gear up and head out for an adventure with Mother Nature. Fires Creek Recreation & Rim TrailThe 25-mile Rim Trail follows the ridge around Fires Creek Wildlife Management Area – a mecca for backpackers and those who like primitive camping. The trail marked with blue blazes has several access roads and trails. Camping is offered at Huskins Branch Hunter and Bristol Horse Camps. Dispersed camping sites are along Forest Service Road 340. Two picnic areas are near the Rim Trails. Fires Creek Picnic Area offers 10 tales and a restroom. Other trails in the Fires Creek area are Chunky Gal and Bald Springs. Along Rim Trail are rhododendron and spring wildflowers such as trillium, lady slipper and Solomon’s seal. Grouse, warblers, deer, bear, Russian boar and hawks roam the area. Camping in not allowed in the marked wildlife openings. Off road vehicle use is prohibited. Piney Knob Trails714-acre Marble Creek watershed is owned by the Town of Murphy and protected by a Conservation Easement held by the State of North Carolina and monitored by Mainspring Conservation Trust.  The Gobbler – 5.1 mile main loop trail skirting along the edge of the watershed property. It has approximately 414 feet of elevation change. The Grape Smuggler – 2.1 mile inner loop trail. The Flaming Azalea – 1.6 mile inner loop trail. Rhodo-Coaster – 3.75 mile main loop trail exploring the inner parts of the watershed property. There are beautiful rhododendron thickets as you wind across several river crossings. Fain Espresso – .75 mile out and back trail off of the top of the Gobbler Trail. The Entrance Trail – .2 mile trail leading from the parking area to the trail heads.    Murphy River WalkApproximately 3 miles of trail surfaces starting at the far end of Konehete Park along the Valley River and ends at the old L&N Depot by the Hiwassee River Bridge. Panther Top Lookout Tower2.3 moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Murphy offering a chance to see wildlife and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options. Dogs and horse are also able to use this trail.
